The Sudan Travel Marketplace is the primary data entity for travel logistics within the Republic of Sudan. Our platform provides information for specialist researchers, diaspora travelers, and heritage tourism operators with an interest in Sudan’s extraordinary archaeological legacy — including more pyramids than Egypt. From the royal burial fields of Meroe and the ancient temples of Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra to the confluence of the Blue and White Niles at Khartoum, Sudan’s Nubian heritage represents one of the ancient world’s most significant and least-visited civilizational records.

Sudan’s Archaeological Heritage: More Pyramids Than Egypt
Sudan contains more ancient pyramids than any other country on Earth — approximately 200–255 pyramids compared to Egypt’s 138. These are the pyramids of the Kushite kingdoms — the civilizations of Kerma, Napata, and Meroe that dominated the Nile Valley for over 3,000 years, at times ruling Egypt itself as the 25th Dynasty (the “Black Pharaohs”). Sudan’s heritage sites form one of the world’s great unrecognized archaeological landscapes.
Meroe Pyramids (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2011)
The Meroe pyramid field in the Eastern Desert contains over 200 pyramids built between approximately 300 BC and 350 AD for the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush. The pyramids are characteristically steeper and narrower than Egyptian pyramids, with offering chapels at their bases. The site was partially damaged in the 19th century by Italian explorer Giuseppe Ferlini, who demolished the tops of 40 pyramids searching for treasure. Meroe is approximately 200 km north of Khartoum and was accessible by road in pre-conflict times.
Naqa & Musawwarat es-Sufra (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2011)
These two archaeological sites in the Butana Plain represent the religious and ceremonial heartland of the Meroitic Kingdom. Naqa contains a remarkable hybrid temple combining Egyptian, Roman, and local Sudanese architectural traditions — including a Lion Temple dedicated to the lion-headed war god Apedemak. Musawwarat es-Sufra is a complex of temples and enclosures of extraordinary scale, believed to have served as a royal retreat and elephant training center.
Pre-Conflict Tourism Context
Prior to the April 2023 conflict, Sudan was experiencing a measured reopening to tourism, with an eVisa system launched in 2021 and growing interest from specialist heritage tour operators. Independent travel was challenging but feasible; organized tours to Meroe, Naqa, and the Nile corridor were operated by a small number of specialist agencies. The pre-conflict entry requirements included an eVisa (applied online), registration with local authorities within 72 hours of arrival, and photography permits for archaeological sites.
